I'm a teacher, blogger, and curriculum writer. I've been teaching science for 12 years at both the middle and high school levels. When I switched from teaching middle school to high school, my new district required all new hires to participate in a new teacher program our first year. Even though I already had 5 years of teaching experience, I took monthly classes with a professional development specialist whose job it was to help navigate teachers through that first year of teaching which we all know is the toughest year! The PD specialist who ran the class and came to observe us was phenomenal.
This year, my first year teaching, has been a whirlwind to say the least. It has been scary-easy to get caught up in the documentation, assessments, administrative expectations, and daily preparation. When my to-do list continues to grow, I lose sight of teaching. I forget that I have daily contact with human beings, many of whom desperately need to be cared for. When the tasks pile up, I get impatient and I lose the joy of my job.
